This Wednesday, tryouts for USAO’s newest sports team will take place. USAO has recently formed a new cross country team for both men and women. The tryouts are not only for current USAO students, but for local high school students as well.

Just picture it.  That attractive co-worker finally asked you out and talk you into going to that great new restaurant in town.  That person forgot to inform you that they are royalty. Becoming snappy with the waiter, shaking half-empty glasses, and complaining about how dry the chicken is.  Halfway through the meal you’re more than ready to go home. And then that dreaded moment. Refusing to leave a tip. How embarrassing!

They may have had some tough losses in recent weeks, but the USAO Men’s Basketball Team showed they are not ready to give up on this season just yet. An inspired second-half comeback in Saturday’s match against Northwestern Oklahoma State University put USAO in a strong position to make the post-season.

Mary Fallin, Governor of the State of Oklahoma signed an executive order, banning the use of tobacco on state property. This includes USAO. The order will go into full effect on July 6, giving the state six months to get rid of all tobacco, including smokeless tobacco, which has recently gained popularity. In Fallin’s January state of the union address, she added that the state Capitol’s smoking room will soon be converted to a fitness center.

Moneyball captivated me unlike so many sports films. Ignoring the clichés of sports movies, it felt like watching a new player from your favorite baseball team clunk a satisfying grand slam out of the park, leaving you in an air of unexpected gratification. Given a different team of filmmakers, this material could be trite to say the least.

A bake sale, Magic tournament and basketball donation drive are among fundraising projects USAO’s Phi Lambda Chi fraternity is planning for the spring trimester. Phi Lambda Chi is a national Fraternity based out of Arkansas, so the Arkansas Children’s Hospital is the home hospital. It is also ranks just under St. Jude's among nonprofit hospitals in the country and Phi Lambda Chi has been donating there for several decades.

Valentine’s Day is Feb. 14 every year. Do you ever wonder why we celebrate it though? The truth is, even historians still wonder about the real origin.

Your Opinion Matters

Is it true that students aren’t using The Trend as a platform to voice their opinion?  This should be the prime resource that students use to take advantage of their First Amendment rights.   Campuses usually have a designated spot for the right to have freedom of speech, but using The Trend is a way to reach all of the student body.

Tom Cruise Does it Again

Tom Cruise does it yet again. He has the ability to save numerous lives, while still looking good. “Mission: Impossible-Ghost Protocol” is the most action-packed MI film to date. Graphic effects are phenomenal and non-stop, exhibiting skills of imagination and engineering such as climbing a glass building, becoming invisible, and floating in mid-air. All been done before? Not quite like this.
