For senior art major April Self, self-image is something beautiful she can capture with her camera.

Self’s reception for her BFA show “Self Image” is Sept 14 in Davis Hall Third Floor Gallery.

“I chose photography because I fell in love with it.  I am fascinated with the ability to catch a moment in time,” Self explained.

She said she chose portraits because she is fascinated with people and “how different and beautiful each and every person is.”

Self is scheduled to graduate in December with a Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) with an emphasis in photography.

A BFA from USAO is an 83-hour degree in which students first take a broad range of art classes and then focus on an emphasis for the last 21-29 hours.

Self said that coming this far in her college career as well as being able to show her work in her own exhibit is exciting because, “I have grown and evolved so much as an artist here at USAO.

“I absolutely love [USAO],” she said, “I love the small school atmosphere.” She explains that she likes being able to talk to her professors in person.  She said she also loves the education department where she was prepared for a career in art education.

After graduating, Self said she plans to get a job as an art teacher in the public school system.

She also has her own photography business for which she takes most of her photos on nights, weekends, and in the summer.

Her reception is at 7 p.m. on Saturday.
