For the eighth year in a row, Chickasha hosted the Oklahoma Food Truck Championship on Sept. 27. The event coincided with the Rock Island Arts Festival and the Rock Island Ride. The event lasted from 11 a.m to 9 p.m. and food trucks from across the state joined in competing for the title of best food truck.
This is one of my favorite events that the City of Chickasha hosts throughout the year and it always pleases. Over 30 food trucks lined the streets of Chickasha with guests packing the streets for something good to eat.
Although I had plans of writing a review of some of the food, going to this event truly was a gift to myself. And yes, there were awards given out to food trucks from judges. But to me, there is no better judge of food than my own stomach. That’s why I’ve taken it upon myself to give my own ratings of the trucks I tried throughout the day.
It was a hot day on Saturday, and that means I was in need of hydration. What better place to get a drink than the Aguita truck to get aqua fresca. Mango and Pineapple were the flavor of my choosing and I must say they hit the spot. I bought two large drinks for $20, and although that is pricey, it was well worth it on a hot day without a lot of shade. I’d give Aguita a 7/10.
Walking down Chickasha Ave, the aroma of barbecue filled the air. The truck that attracted me most was Barbell BBQ and a brisket sandwhich was calling my name. The sandwich was filled with chopped brisket and it definitely hit the spot. A soft bun and a side of chips to go along really made it a full meal. I’d rate this truck and the sandwich an 8/10.
One thing I was excited for coming into the championship was birria tacos. I see them on TikTok all the time and I wanted them to be as good as they look online. When I saw them on the menu at Gordo’s Mexican Food, I got a little giddy. Honestly, they fulfilled my expectations. The outside of the tacos were crispy and the pork inside was seasoned great. The sauce you dip it in brought the whole thing together and satisfied my tastebuds. I’d rate the dish an 8/10.
My most surprising dish of the day was from a truck that had a short line and an even shorter wait time. Yum Yum Bites sold skewered meats that caught my eye and I decided to give it a try. I ordered skewered chicken and when they handed me my order, I was shocked by the size of the piece of chicken. It was a tender and juicy piece of chicken and the spicy sauce that topped it gave it another factor that made it the best dish of the day. The tanginess and spice in the sauce was amazing and I would get this again without a question. 9/10
Lastly is dessert, and my choice was a peanut butter cup whoopie from The Whoopie Wagon. This cookie sandwich filled with cream tasted just like a peanut butter cup and had a very creamy filling. I was stuffed from all the food I had ate throughout the day, but I am glad that I saved room for this delicious treat. 7/10.
As you can tell, I’m already counting down the days for next year’s Oklahoma Food Truck Championship and I’m sure I’m not the only one. The streets were full, and by 7 p.m. when I went back by the event, many vendors had sold out of a lot of their items with some even packing up and heading home by being sold out. For myself, and I’m sure the City of Chickasha, the Oklahoma Food Truck Championship 2025 was a massive success.
