Did you know the University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma has 28 clubs and organizations? That number did in fact grow from the spring trimester. There have been a couple new clubs and organizations formed, one of those clubs seemingly coming out of nowhere.
The International Students Club (ISC) popped out of nowhere on August 29 with their very first event, a cookout. Even though this event was a surprise to most, this club has been in the making since the spring and summer.
Crispin Mbii, serving as acting president, is the creator of the club. In the spring trimester the Student Government Association (SGA) had an international student committee, which sparked the idea of forming this club.
USAO is a diverse campus, made up of all ages, genders, ethnicities, and nationalities. There are currently 1,074 students enrolled in the university and 8.4 percent are international students.
The whole purpose of the club is to help international students become more equipped here in the States. That includes getting connected with other nationals, building communities, and gaining resources that support academic and social success.
“One of our main goals is to serve. Give back to the community and bring the community closer to us,” said Crispin.
This is the definition of the ISC statement; United by gratitude, driven to serve. When anyone is given the opportunity, seize the opportunity, and live the opportunity.
As of right now the club has people serving in executive positions because they have not had elections. The following is a list of the executive team:
- Crispin Mbii as President
- Thiago Fasano as Vice President
- Dagbjort Gudmundsdottir as Secretary
- Jamal Brooks as Treasurer
- Maddyson McMorris as Operation Coordinator
- Matjia Malenovic as Public Relations Coordinator assisted by Emilee Slovak
- President Kayla Hale is the club’s advisor and Joseph Quickle is the leadership mentor.
- ISC hopes to plan more events throughout the trimester. Be on the look out and feel free to join because the club is not just for international students.
