Metcalf’s Second Camp Taught Fundamentals
July 2, 2014
After a positive first week of camp earlier this June, Drover Head Coach Vinson Metcalf planned to follow that up with another impressive second week for the area’s young basketball players.
As the second session concluded Friday, the primary focus for that week was to continue instilling the team concept that proved so successful in the first week, and build upon that by stressing the fundamentals of the game.
“This week (of camp) went very well,” Metcalf said. “We put them through the fundamentals mostly, but also had hot shot and free throw competitions with the winners getting trophies.”
With the age of the campers ranging from five to eleven-years-old, there were many different skill levels on hand, but all the young athletes got the guidance and help they needed to become better, more competitive basketball players.
“This time around we focused more on skills and drills,” Metcalf added. “We worked on man-to-man defense, ball handling, shooting, and one-on-one offense and defense.”
Metcalf said he hopes all of the athletes come back next summer to help improve their games.
The camp met Monday through Friday from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. with just over 40 young basketball players in attendance.
