Senior Art Major Kelsea Mallette Curates Show For The Nesbitt Gallery
February 4, 2014
Our university is dedicated to a hands-on learning experience and Kelsea Mallette, a senior art major with an emphasis in printmaking, is a great example of what USAO programs can do. Mallette received the chance to curate an art show that will be exhibited in our very own Nesbitt Gallery. She is one of two students who have attempted this at USAO.
“Curating an art show is an art form in itself,” said Mallette. “I didn’t build a respect for the craft of it until I had to prepare the show.”
An art curator does not provide the art pieces, but is in charge of arranging the pieces in a way that is aesthetically pleasing to the viewers.
“So many different elements depend on how you can best represent the artist. Whether it be the lighting of the pieces or how to group them and even just making sure they are level. It is an artistic practice,” said Mallette.
Mallette was work-study for a semester under Layne Thrift, assistant professor of Art and Director of Nesbitt Gallery. She then moved up to assistant director of Nesbitt.
A reception for the show, which had been scheduled for Feb. 8, has been cancelled due to the weather.
