The USAO University Music Appreciation Club (UMA) started as a music major “get-to-know-you.” Now, every other Tuesday at noon in the Nash Library Music Pocket, the meetings are fun and full of energy.
The club functions for all music appreciators to have a chill place to hang out and talk. This has transformed into fun events like playing games, talking about music, and having record-listening parties.
Everybody with a love or interest in music is welcome to join. Right now, there are about 15 members, including the officers. Jaden Johnston serves as president, Willow Neron as vice president, Danner McGarrah as secretary, Remy Brownlge as treasurer, and Mobi Jones as reporter.
In the past, UMA has held game nights, movie nights, and craft nights. More recently, UMA collaborated with PRISM and various other clubs in the Pride Party this semester. They also teamed up with the Student Activities Board for Dusty’s After Dark October 24th. This event saw a karaoke night and a Halloween costume contest where the winner won a cash prize.
While they have been busy this trimester, they are looking to host another event in the near future. This would be the “instrument petting zoo,” which would be held in the Music Annex.
The biggest goals of UMA are helping others get to know people, making friends, and emphasizing community. The members are close, and they all have admiration for each other.
“Our goal is to create a welcoming community for music lovers,” Johnston stated.
If you would like to join, it is recommended to show up to their meetings and/or reach out to Johnston or any of the club officers. They have an Instagram account at usao.uma.
