The Accent Art & Literary Journal is conducting a short ghost story contest. It can be in any genre within a 500-word limit; the deadline is October 31st. The top three stories and an honorable mention will be published on the journal’s website. In the upcoming spring trimester, there will be a printed edition, and the top three stories will be published there as well.
“We are a student-driven publication that strives to give USAO students a platform to have their art seen,” said Sean Tourtelotte, Co-Editor in Chief of The Accent Art & Literary Journal.
The Accent Art & Literary Journal has been around since 2012 and has been led by faculty and students. Its last publication was in 2021 due to the pandemic causing it to lose some traction. However, this fiction contest serves as a post-pandemic relaunch with new students and faculty under the leadership roles. Along with this relaunch, the journal will be website-based until the printed edition comes out in the spring.
“The flash fiction contest is a good way for writers to hone their skills and get published, which is not a small thing,” Kyle Cox, Co-editor of The Accent Art & Literary Journal, said.
This publication is a way for writers and eventually artists to get their works published to be read and seen by the public. This will allow students to experience the competitive nature and prestige of becoming published artists and authors.
The Accent Art & Literary Journal plans to eventually expand to arts, including photography. In the future, they plan to produce a couple more short story contests, where students will have another opportunity to get published in their printed edition.
