USAO’s Yarn Lovers Society (YLS), a student-led organization, meets Thursdays in the Lawson Club House conference room from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. to work on crochet, knitting, and embroidery projects together, as well as lend guidance when needed.
YLS currently has open membership, encourages individuals to join their community of students who love fiber arts, and teach those who are interested.
The organization was founded in the fall of 2022. The club encourage people of any experience level to join.
“All you have to do is show up, grab a chair, introduce yourself, and start working on something,” Montana Lovell, co-president of YLS, said.
Many of the organization members joined the club with no experience in fiber arts. The first meeting of the fall 2023 trimester had two of their executives demonstrating how to crochet.
YLS plans on hosting workshops throughout the year to give people who haven’t attended meetings the space and tools to learn how to crochet.
Unlike many other clubs on USAO’s campus, YLS does not require its members to pay a fee to join. Lovell said she characterizes the club as a community of friends who simply want to exchange knowledge, lend a helping hand, and have a good time.
Last school year, YLS hosted a booth at Droverstock where they held a raffle for a handmade bag that various members of the organization made. Lovell described the raffle as “a hit,” as many members of the community entered the raffle for a chance to win the bag.
After the success at the previous Droverstock, the organization has plans to hold another booth where members can show off and sell their own projects.
“To someone thinking of joining I would say ‘absolutely do it,’” said Rhiannon Allen, an executive and member of YLS. “Any experience is welcome, and we would love to have you.”
Those who wish to know more contact YLS through their Instagram (@USAO_Yarn_ Club) or email Jordan Kirkland or Lovell, as they are the club’s co-presidents.
