AV Club: An Undiscovered Gem in Media News

Karis eagerly shares how she stumbled upon one of the most raw and unique media new sources: AV Club.
October 15, 2016
I have recently stumbled upon one of the most raw and unique media new sources I have ever come across; AV Club.
As a longtime fan of all things indie, I was pleasantly surprised to find a source for all things underground.
Surprisingly, AV Club is affiliated to The Onion, a satirical news source famously known for making blatantly false articles vaguely related to current events, which had me extremely suspicious on the legitimacy of AV Club’s sources and content.
I was happy to learn, upon investigation into AV Club’s mission statement, that the two sources are simply sister sites with no correlation on what either source posts.
AV Club specifically clarifies that their interviews, reviews and other media content are all authentic and truthful; their aim being to expose underground musicians, filmmakers, writers, food establishments, actors, and much more in a truthful manner.
The site hosts several forms of news and specials, one being AV Undercover.
AV Undercover is a special the site has where indie musicians come into the studio and are asked to pick one song from a list of 100 songs that AV previously chose.
The special has hosted indie/folk legends such as Dredson Dolls, AJJ and Trampled by Turtles just to name a few.
Once a musician picks a song, it gets marked off the list, meaning the later in the year a musicians performs, the less of a choice they have; creating a hilariously candid performance from bands and artists.
This special was how I discovered AV Club. I watched a pleasantly hilarious, but oddly impressive performance from the one and only Mac Demarco, casually adlibbing his way through Sweater Song by Weezer.
This is only one of a plethora of media specials AV Club hosts.
The news source also contains insightful book reviews, unique interviews, in depth articles on entertainment, and much more.
AV Club has also effortlessly shown its readers and viewers how modern day social issues can be directly related to the work being done by these underground/indie artists.
Touching on subjects spanning from women’s rights, to environmental issues, all the way to racial discrimination in the entertainment business.
I highly recommend AV Club to anyone interested in a reliable, down to earth media source or who is simply a fan of indie artistic expression.
