This trimester, audiences will get a treat when the theatre arts department presents Galileo by Bertolt Brecht. The production will take place Friday, Feb. 26 and Saturday, Feb. 27 in the Davis Hall Little Theatre. Professional actor Tyler Woods, who is artistic director of the Reduxion Theatre and recipient of the Governor’s Arts Award, will portray the title role.
According to Katie Davis, coordinator of the theatre arts department and director of the production, not only will the audience benefit from watching a professional, but the cast will gain insight into acting on the professional level. Davis said her job as director is to guide cast members as they work to become their characters.
“These students are incredibly devoted, invested, and punctual. Nobody cares more about the quality of what goes on the stage than the theatre students,” said Davis.
Galileo covers a specific time during the life of Galileo, including making his own improvements to the telescope and discovering the sun is the center of the solar system. It also covers him being chased by the Inquisition and publicly shamed.
Davis said Galileo should help audience members understand that a long history of conflict has occurred between scientific fact and personal beliefs. These beliefs mixed with large influential powers encourages the public’s ignorance.
“The play helps students learn about what’s going on right now. The average person has a responsibility to get the facts and not be ignorant,” said Davis.
Admission is free for USAO students with a student ID. Tickets will be available to purchase through the box office the days of the performance.
