In early 2021, Machine Gun Kelly (MGK) released his 14-song musical drama video called “Downfalls High”.
Throughout the 49-minute video on YouTube, viewers follow the teenage love story between Fenix and Scarlett. Their relationship grows stronger with each new song played and changes young Fenix’s life forever.
Like every good love story, the video starts at the end before reliving the events that led to this moment. In the drama, the two directors, MGK and Mod Sun, carefully place vintage clips that they filmed on a $20 camera for authenticity and nostalgia.
“If it’s real love you can’t move past it. You shouldn’t have to,” said MGK in an interview with SiriusXM. He says he wants the themes of undying love to bleed through this storyline.
As MGK’s first attempt at directing, he knocked it out of the park with his attention to detail and storytelling abilities. Even if you are not the biggest fan of MGK’s music style, you can appreciate the way the drama flows from song to song and from scene to scene.
Each song is a performance all its own. The video did not have a stereotypical musical video feel but that of a short film, because the video includes an in-depth story line with plot twists and dialogue. MGK’s lyrics hit a whole new level of depth and meaning.
On YouTube, the video already has an astonishing 24 million views, as of February 2022. Fans continue to flock to the video. Between January and February 2022, the video tacked on another million views. For fans who want to show their love and support, there is a website where people can buy merchandise and their own diploma from “Downfalls High.
