After finishing his first season as the Drovers’ head men’s basketball coach, Vinson Metcalf held his first session for his summer basketball camp this past week, where over 50 young athletes attended.

Metcalf says this particular camp session was meant for teaching campers the concept of a team and how to be disciplined.

“We had teams playing games as a team and winning as a team, instead of individuals,” Metcalf said. “Being disciplined and being able to do things the coaches have asked you to do can go a long way and that goes along the lines of being coachable.”

These young athletes had the chance to receive guidance from college athletes and coaches as well as local high school talent.

“I got two kids from the (Chickasha) high school team, and I wanted them to come in and participate in the camp,” Metcalf said. “The two kids I saw attend the basketball camp as little kids, and I’ve seen grow up, are now at the age they want to be a part of the camp from a coach’s perspective.”

Metcalf says the first session was a success, and he looks forward to seeing more athletes attend the second session later in the month.

The second session of the camp will take place from June 23-27. All campers will need to be at the gym by 8:15 and be picked up by 11:30. There will be no day camp for the second session.
