Brainwaves Camp Gives Children A Reason To Appreciate Education

Monday, June 30, 2014

This summer USAO is seeing a slew of summer camps, but there is one that probably hits closer to home than most.

Brainwaves, a two week summer camp, was created by Dr. Peter Thomas and Dr. J.C. Sanders. The first week is for 5th and 7th graders and the second is for 3rd and 4th graders.

Thomas and Sanders created Brainwaves as an outreach to the community and as a way to give back. They want Brainwaves to help the students pursue and appreciate education and to start looking at careers.

Alea Nelson, a 5th grader from Pratt, Kansas, attended the camp and said, “Brainwaves gives you a more creative way to learn.”

She also said that she has already started recommending the camp to all her friends.

Brainwaves emphasizes USAO’s dedication to the interdisciplinary education and is limited to 20 students so they can experience the personal attention that USAO has to offer. Students will attend a diverse group of sessions that deal with science, writing, music, and art. Students will do everything from data and graphing in Excel to creative writing.
